Radio Pays Tribute to the LGBTQ+ Community with Pride Month Celebration

The LGBTQ+ community in America has achieved remarkable progress since the 1969 Stonewall Riots. These riots launched a new era of resistance and revolution that eventually led to the U.S. legally recognizing same-sex marriage.

It was on a hot June summer night in 1969 when police raided New York City’s Stonewall Inn, a little private gay bar that was a sanctuary to the city’s LGBT community. During this time there had been only one state in the U.S. which allowed homosexual activity. Unsurprisingly, police raids on gay bars were quite common during this time.

What was different about the raid on Stonewall Inn, was that the city’s gay community decided to finally fight back and a multi-night uprising on the streets of Greenwich Village took place? These riots are widely considered representing one of the most important events leading to the gay liberation movement.

For many decades, they have celebrated Pride Month in June across the United States and the world, to commemorate the Stonewall Riots. The month is dedicated to the uplifting of LGBTQ+ voices and to the continued support of their rights.

Most Pride celebrations were completely off the table last year because of COVID-19, but as cities cautiously re-open this month, many in-person events and parades are expected to take place to honor the LGBTQ+ community.

Many radio stations and channels are also celebrating Pride Month with dancefloor anthems, diva ballads, Broadway show-stoppers and much more.

Los Angeles’ 102.7 KIIS FM station is celebrating Pride Month with information on their website that links to LGBTQ+ films to watch and events taking place in Los Angeles in June, including LGBTQ+ Pride Night at the Dodger’s Stadium.

Audacy, a free broadcast and Internet radio platform owned by the namesake company Audacy, Inc., has launched a month-long multi-platform campaign to celebrate Pride Month and the LGTBQ+ community called “Celebrations in Pride.”

“We’re delighted to leverage our national scale and local connection to celebrate Pride Month through this exciting and entertaining campaign,” said Michael Martin, Senior Vice President of Programming and Music Initiatives, Audacy. “We look forward to connecting our audience to our industry’s biggest superstars and influential allies of the LGTBQ+ community and delivering powerful everyday content throughout the month.”

“After a tough year for so many in our community, it’s great to be able to celebrate Pride with our amazing artists and allies,” said Brian Holt, Brand Manager, CHANNEL Q. “Though we celebrate Pride throughout the year, Pride Month provides a great opportunity to showcase our many initiatives and our amazing artists and allies who support the LGBTQ+ community.”

Music streaming platform Spotify has also announced a series of month-long activations under the title ‘Claim your space’ while Virgin Radio UK has launched the Virgin Radio Pride UK, a station for the LGBTQ+ community that will broadcast from June 7th until the end of September.

iHeartRadio PRIDE Radio, which is a 24/7 streamed channel, was launched in 2006 and is an LGBTQ+ lifestyle and top 40 radio network launched by Clear Channel Communications Format Lab under the direction of Michael Albl.

Pride Radio is the Pulse Of LGBTQ+ America, and the channel plays upbeat Top 40 music and dance music targeted to the LGBTQ+ community.

This year iHeartRadio and P&G hosted Can’t Cancel Pride on June 4th, a celebration to raise visibility and funds for the LGBTQ+ community. Some of the biggest names in culture and entertainment are connected to the event including Pink, Bebe Rexha, and Kylie Minogue.

On June 1st, the Pride Radio channel tweeted, “Ready to celebrate #PRIDEMonth with a blow-out party!? So are we! #CantCancelPride is back and bigger than ever! Thanks to @proctergamble we’re raising funds the for #LGBTQ community!”
